Egyptian walking onions, also known as tree onions are a low-maintenance PERENNIAL onion variety with a unique propagation method. They can grow up to 30" tall, with hollow green stalks and red or purple bulbs that are slightly larger than the stem. Instead of flowers, they produce small bulbils on stalks from June to September. All parts are edible. I like to pickle the small bulbils for the charcuterie board. My friend has the plants in her perennial beds for vertical interest. First image shows sprouted bulbils on a mature clump. Second image shows actual available stock, Sharpie for size comparison.
