American hazelnut (Corylus americana) is a native multi-stemmed shrub (8-15 feet tall), known for its edible nuts, attractive catkins, and fall foliage. It's great for wildlife gardens, hedges, and naturalizing. It's adaptable to various soils and light conditions (sun to part shade) but REQUIRES PLANTING AT LEAST TWO SHRUBS FOR CROSS-POLLINATION TO PRODUCE NUTS, which are smaller than European hazelnuts but prized by wildlife and humans. The leaves turn orange/red in fall. It produces showy, dangling male catkins and small, reddish female flowers in early spring. Nuts mature in late summer/fall. Excellent for attracting squirrels, deer, birds (grouse, turkey, woodpeckers), and moths (Luna moth).
