Because of the great distances separating armies during the Civil War, both the Confederate and Union forces recognized the strategic advantages offered by rail transportation. The CH&D Railroad (Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton) and the Monon Route played large roles in supporting the Union forces. They carried troops, ammunition, food, fuel, and medicine to the front lines. So, it is easy to see why their railway monogram would appear on a Civil War lithograph showing Union soldiers at rest. That logo would have been added sometime later, as it was not part of the original print.
This piece of art has been attributed to Swedish born Thure de Thulstrup. In the very late 1800’s he became a well-known artist and illustrator, with a series of paintings depicting the American Civil War. In this piece, you will see initials carved into the plank walls, of the many Union forces that passed that way. Some of these include: the 87th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, the 40th New York Infantry, and the 38th Virginia Infantry.
I found very little information on this lithograph, and believe it to be a rare piece of cross-over railroad advertising. The framing suggests the very early 1900’s or late 1800’s. I find no stains, with minimal foxing if any. Overall, the framing measures about 18” x 13 ½” in size. The watermark I attempted to place over my photo “will not” be part of the artwork. It was placed there to protect the integrity of the piece from being easily copied. The back dust cover has since been replaced, as well as a new cable being installed. It is now ready to hang.
